Over the past several years, I have been breathing through various personas within my paintings. At the most fundamental level, I make art to hold on to the desire to live again—the desire of a being who has become so exhausted and wounded that they have collapsed, yet still wishes to rise and continue living. I was born and raised in the city, but the moments that have mattered most to me have always taken place in nature. I have often found myself in unexpected and precarious situations, and whenever pain overwhelmed me, I would try countless ways simply not to sink beneath it.

Of all the ways I found to save myself, the most meaningful was to enter into nature. I remember one decisive moment when I was confronted with an unbearable and unavoidable pain. I was leaning quietly against a window, watching the leaves sway gently in the breeze. That small, ordinary scene struck something deep within me. The sound of the leaves moving in the wind reminded me of waves washing onto a shore, as if they were whispering to me, telling me that perhaps I should try living a little longer. From that day on, I began to believe in the power of beauty, and I spent countless hours among the sea, mountains, and fields. I have stayed awake through the night between rocks, watching the dawn arrive; I have sat quietly beneath the morning star, Venus, breathing in the scent of grass spreading through the damp air. Lying on the sand by the sea as waves passed gently over my body, I experienced moments in which I seemed to dissolve and become transparent, almost as if I were becoming part of nature itself. These were the moments that brought me the greatest comfort, while at the same time making me feel as though I were coming alive again.

I created each persona by combining the sensations I experienced in nature with my own sense of identity. Ah, with her red hair, embodies the endless regenerative power of the earth—the possibility of being born anew at any moment. The White-Haired figure speaks of the solidarity of sea foam, which becomes stronger through togetherness. The pink-haired Shell represents the lyricism and abundance of love. Though each possesses a different appearance and temperament, they are ultimately different manifestations of the sensations and states of mind through which I found a way to live again. More recently, this world has expanded through the journey of Black Shell, a persona of profound isolation. When Black Shell encounters Won, an external presence, she begins a nonlinear adventure through which she discovers mutual respect, hospitality, and the courage to move beyond her own boundaries. The process of a closed-off being encountering another and discovering the possibility of forming a relationship again is also, for me, a form of living again.

Rather than arranging these stories along a linear chronology, I wanted to dissolve the boundaries of time. Throughout my paintings, the personas and symbols follow different trajectories, yet they all share one fundamental imperative: the desire of a being who has become so exhausted and wounded that they have collapsed, yet still wishes to live again. This does not mean complete recovery or a happy ending. Sometimes living again may simply mean remaining where you are for a while instead of getting back up. It may mean holding someone’s hand, feeling the breath of nature, or taking one small step forward. This is why the points I place on the graph of my paintings are not conclusions, but commas within an ongoing process. If these points are connected by lines, they will eventually become life itself.

Ultimately, I wanted to tell a story of being saved. Not a story about becoming completely healed or finally being okay, but a story about a being who chooses to live again even in moments when everything is not okay. I want to tell myself, and anyone somewhere who is enduring their own life, that it is okay to be here, that it is okay to live again, and that it is okay to believe. Even along the long journey of life, there will be moments when we are wounded and forced to collapse. And still, we can look toward nature again, love and be loved, and continue to live in relationship with the world.
